There are some assignments that, once finished, leave you feeling better than when you started.  This assignment was one of those experiences for me.  When I got the call from Poets and Writers Magazine that I would be photographing bestselling, mystery author James Lee Burke I was more than a little nervous.  He’s a well known figure in the area and when we chatted on the phone I worried that I might need more time than he was going to have to make as many photos as I wanted.  As I drove down the dirt road that leads to his home in Lolo, Montana my stomach was full of butterflies.  I knocked on the door, waited, and there was no answer.  I had seen a light on round the back of the house and knew he was there so I knocked again.  No answer.  Finally, not wanting to be late, I walked around back to find Mr. Burke playing guitar in his office and singing.  That’s when I knew we were going to have fun.  I knocked, he let me in, and we spent the next hour or so laughing, making photos, and talking favorite movies and books.  He told me about his time working in newspapers in the South, how much he loved people watching, and his thoughts on Hurricane Katrina.  When I left I held a small sheet of paper with his movie recommendations he had written out for me.

Identifying a Fake Rolex: Signs to Look For

Inaccuracies in Logo and Branding
One of the telltale signs of a fake Rolex is inaccuracies in the logo and branding. Counterfeiters often struggle to replicate the intricate details of the Rolex crown logo, resulting in slight variations from the authentic design.

Poor Quality Materials
Fake Rolex watches are typically made using inferior materials compared to genuine Rolex timepieces. From the case and bracelet to the dial and hands, counterfeit watches often exhibit poor craftsmanship and substandard quality.

Inconsistent Movement
Authentic Rolex watches are known for their precision and smooth movement. In contrast, fake Rolex watches may feature inconsistent or jerky movement due to inferior internal components.

Lack of Serial Numbers or Documentation
Every genuine Rolex watch comes with a unique serial number and accompanying documentation, such as a warranty card and certificate of authenticity. Counterfeit watches often lack these essential identifiers or feature forged documentation.

Consequences of Purchasing a Fake Rolex
Financial Loss
One of the most significant consequences of purchasing a fake Rolex is the financial loss incurred by the buyer. While counterfeit watches may initially seem like a bargain, they hold little to no value compared to genuine Rolex watches and may even depreciate over time.

Legal Ramifications
The production and sale of counterfeit goods are illegal in many countries, including the United States and Europe. Purchasing a fake Rolex not only supports criminal activity but also exposes the buyer to potential legal consequences.

Damage to Reputation
Owning a fake Rolex can also tarnish one’s reputation, especially among watch enthusiasts and collectors. In the world of luxury watches, authenticity and integrity hold significant value, and being associated with counterfeit goods can have lasting repercussions.

How to Avoid Buying a Fake Rolex
Purchase from Authorized Dealers
To ensure the authenticity of a Rolex watch, it is recommended to purchase from authorized dealers or directly from the official Rolex website. Authorized dealers adhere to strict guidelines set by Rolex and guarantee the authenticity of their products.

Research and Inspection
Before making a purchase, conduct thorough research on the specific Rolex model you are interested in and familiarize yourself with its features and specifications. When inspecting a watch in person, pay close attention to details such as the weight, materials, and craftsmanship.

Consult with Experts
If uncertain about the authenticity of a Rolex watch, seek advice from experienced watchmakers or appraisers who specialize in luxury timepieces. These experts can provide valuable insights and help verify the authenticity of the watch in question.

The Ethical Dilemma of Counterfeit Goods
The prevalence of counterfeit goods raises ethical concerns regarding intellectual property rights, consumer safety, and supporting criminal enterprises. While purchasing counterfeit products may seem harmless to some, it perpetuates a cycle of illegal activity and undermines the integrity of legitimate brands.

The Impact of Fake Rolex on the Luxury Watch Industry
The proliferation of fake Rolex watches not only harms consumers but also poses a significant threat to the luxury watch industry as a whole. Counterfeit goods undermine the exclusivity and prestige associated with luxury brands, ultimately devaluing their authentic products.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the prevalence of fake Rolex watches highlights the importance of vigilance and due diligence when purchasing luxury goods. By familiarizing oneself with the signs of counterfeit products and only buying from reputable sources, consumers can protect themselves from falling victim to scams and support the integrity of the luxury watch industry.

Sometimes photo shoots are about making a picture quickly and getting out — or creating an image to a clients exact specifications.  For me, this shoot was a gift.  It was the kind of thing that made me a photographer in the first place.  Just two people, talking about the things they love, laughing and making photos in the process.  What a treat.

  1. Catherine A. Pacheco says:

Gonna have to find this magazine. Great pictures! Thanks.

I absolutely LOVE James Lee Burke. Very few people, besides my son, I feel that way about. NOBODY writes like him (well, Shakespeare’s pretty good, but he hasn’t produced much new of late). There are some very good writers out there today whom I really enjoy reading, but JLB leads the pack by a country mile.

I only buy hardbacks by him, Michael Connelly, John Connolly and Lee Child. If my financial situation worsens (part of the retirement age blues)I’ll give up the latter three long before I give up Mr. Burke. I’ll have to ask my son to get any new releases for me.

Parenthetically: (I’m a complete lunatic about Cajun music. [Well I love the French music of Louisiana, in general. But, OH MY GOD CAJUN!] Finding LA French music in ’90 or ’91 led me to James Lee Burke. Another reason to be grateful to the Creoles and Cajuns who came to the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing their music and culture with them. And that gratitude more than extends to JLB and his gifts to me. Oooohh, ma cha!)
    :) :) :)

  2. Candice Kirkman says:

My favorite author, head and shoulders above the rest. An old soul in a poets body is how he strikes me. He makes me yearn for the places he writes about. My hats always off to Mr. James Lee Burke. When there are no longer new books by him to read I’ll star over with the first. Can’t and don’t want to imagine not having his books!

  3. Linda M. Williams says:

What a wonderful article and pictures of my very favorite author. I have tried many times to make it to a place he was appearing to get his autograph and missed him every time – once by only a few hours (in New Orleans). He is, without a doubt, the most humble down-to-earth writer I have ever read. When I pick up one of his books I know I am going to feel right at home and comfortable immediately. He makes pictures with his words so easily and I can see them right there in front of me. The world would be a much better place with more people like James Lee Burke! God Bless!!

  4. Beth McKinnon says:

My favorite author of all times. I love this man. Meeting him would be a dream come true. Can’t wait to read his next novel.

  6. Kathryn Glidewell says:

I,too, can’t wait to get this issue.I read a lot and nobody has ever moved me the way James Lee Burke does-every time! His mastery of language takes me right to the heart of the matter in all of his stories. Makes me wonder what it’s like to compose with the best. Your photos are a highlight! Thanks to both of you for sharing.

  7. Marcia Dunn says:

The greatest writer living today…I have read many books that were page turners…the difference is that JLB’s books are read over and over again by everyone…they are like an old friend that you want to revisit all your life.

  8. Katherine Bourque-Menard says:
